Can We Use Nonophthalmic Drug in Ophthalmology? Nonophthalmic Drug potential for ophthalmology
نویسنده
چکیده
Progress in ophthalmology is accompanying with nonophthalmic drug use. Calcium channel blockers, which alter the intracellular calcium concentration by modifying calcium flux across cell membranes and affect various intracellular signaling processes, have been long and widely used to treat essential hypertension and certain types of cardiac diseases such as angina pectoris. Among five subtypes of calcium channels, only specific agents for L-type calcium channels have been used as therapeutics. There are potentially multiple biological bases for the protective effect of calcium channel blockers on eye structures. The objective of this review is to evaluate the evidence and discuss the rationale behind the recent suggestions that calcium channel blockers may be useful in the prevention and the treatment of different eye diseases.

We investigated the lymphocyte characteristics of 77 Graves' disease patients with and without infiltrative ophthalmopathy. Thirteen patients with infiltrative ophthalmopathy without prior antithyroid therapy and 20 euthyroid patients with progressive ophthalmopathy demonstrated decreased percentages of active and total erythrocyte rosette-forming lymphocytes compared to thyrotoxic patients wit...
متن کاملOcular Fundus Photography as an Educational Tool.
The proficiency of nonophthalmologists with direct ophthalmoscopy is poor, which has prompted a search for alternative technologies to examine the ocular fundus. Although ocular fundus photography has existed for decades, its use has been traditionally restricted to ophthalmology clinical care settings and textbooks. Recent research has shown a role for nonmydriatic fundus photography in nonoph...

BACKGROUND Systemic cancer therapies cause a variety of ophthalmic complications. Mitigating harmful adverse events involves screening patients at risk for ocular injury and vision loss. METHODS A review of the relevant literature on the ophthalmic complications of cancer therapy was used to formulate an approach to screening patients for serious complications presenting at a nonophthalmic sp...

Additional anomalies include congenital heart defects, intestinal malrotation, agenesis of the genitourinary s...
متن کاملClinical Applications of Optical Coherence Tomography in Ophthalmology
Optical coherence tomography (OCT) was first reported in 1991 as a non-invasive ocular imaging technology (Huang et al, 1991; Hrynchak & Simpson, 2007). It generates a false-color representation of the tissue structures, based on the intensity of the returned light. Over years, the clinical applications of OCT have improved dramatically in precision and specificity. It has been compared to an i...
